Why a Tall Window Changes the Whole Plan

A shade nine feet up and a shade twenty-two feet up are not the same project, even if they are the same fabric.

At normal height, a dead battery is a two-minute annoyance. Up in a stairwell, over a front entry, or across the top of a great room wall, that same dead battery means an extension ladder on a hard floor, or scaffolding, or on our tallest installs, a scissor lift. That is not a small thing. Depending on your age, your health, or how steady you feel on a ladder, it might be something you should not be doing at all.

So before we talk fabric or color, we ask three questions:

  • How high is it, and what is underneath it? A window over a staircase or an open two-story foyer is a different animal than a window over a flat floor.
  • How often will you actually move it? A shade you cycle twice a day drains power faster than one you set seasonally.
  • Which direction does the window face? This one surprises people, and it matters more than almost anything else. More on that below.

Four Ways We Power Motorized Window Treatments for Hard-to-Reach Windows

Hardwired Power, The Permanent Answer

If you want to install a shade and never think about it again, hardwire it.

An electrician runs wiring to the window; we wire the shade into it, and it stays powered. No batteries, no charging, no ladder. Short of a power outage, it works every time you ask.

AA batteries, Fine Down Low, Rough Up High

Hunter Douglas offers simple AA battery power, and it works well. On a normal window.

The problem is that AA batteries need changing roughly once a year. On a shade you can reach from a step stool, that is nothing. On a twenty-foot window, you are committing yourself or someone in your family to an annual trip up an extension ladder. We are upfront with clients about this. If a window is genuinely hard to reach, AAs are usually the wrong choice.

Rechargeable Battery Packs

The middle ground. Hunter Douglas offers two configurations, both stretching your interval to roughly eighteen months.

One is a removable pack that hangs on the back of the shade. You take it down, charge it, and reinstall it. The other lets you plug a cord into the battery while it stays in the cradle, so you charge it right there in the window.

Both beat swapping AAs every year. But eighteen months on a tall window still means getting up there, just less often, and on our tallest installs that means scaffolding or a lift.

Internal Rechargeable Battery with a Solar Charger

For most hard-to-reach windows, this is where we land.

Many Hunter Douglas shades have a rechargeable battery built directly into the headrail. A cord plugs into that internal battery and runs to a slim solar panel mounted in the window, facing the street. The panel trickle charges the battery continuously, so it never gets low enough to need your attention.

Hunter Douglas uses low light level panels, meaning they harvest energy without needing blazing direct sun, and they come in black and white so the interior-facing side matches your window trim. From outside, it reads as a thin dark strip along the glass. Most people never notice it.

Done right, this is the setup that keeps a shade running for years without anyone touching a ladder.

The Orientation Rule Nobody Tells You

North-facing windows do not get enough sunlight to reliably keep a shade charged. We have seen it in the field. The battery struggles, you end up back on the ladder, and the whole point is lost.

Solar charging belongs on east- and west-facing windows that get real morning or afternoon light. A north-facing tall window is not a dead end; it is a signal. That is the window we steer toward hardwiring, because wiring does not care what the sun is doing.

Worth saying plainly too: batteries are not a permanent solution. Rechargeable or not, every battery wears out. Solar charging extends its life by preventing deep discharges, but if permanent is the goal, the answer is the electrician.

How You Actually Control Motorized Blinds and Shades Up There

Older motorization meant aiming a remote at a shade and hoping. That is gone.

Radio Frequency Remote

Our standard remote is radio frequency, not infrared. You do not have to point it at anything. You do not need line of sight. You select the shade on the remote and raise or lower it from wherever you happen to be standing, including the next room.

Bluetooth and Your Phone

  • Duette honeycomb shades are our most common recommendation for tall windows. That cellular construction does serious work on a two-story wall of glass in a Kansas City July, and again in January.

How do you change the batteries on a shade you cannot reach?

That is exactly the problem we try to design around before it happens. A solar charger paired with an internal rechargeable battery keeps the shade topped off so you never need to get up there, and hardwiring removes the question entirely.
