Outdoor Patio Shades in Kansas City: Exterior Solar Screens
Kansas City summers make a west-facing patio hard to use by late afternoon, and spring evenings bring wind and mosquitoes. Exterior solar screen shades fix that. They roll down over the open sides of a covered patio, porch, or pergola to cut glare and heat, keep out bugs and rain, and still let you see the yard. When you don’t need them, they roll up out of sight.
We design, measure, and install Insolroll Oasis patio shades across the Kansas City metro, manual or motorized.
What Are Exterior Solar Screen Shades?
Exterior solar screen shades are roller shades built for outdoor use. A tightly woven screen fabric stops much of the sun before it reaches your seating area. According to Insolroll, its solar screen fabrics block up to 99% of UV rays while you still see out.
Because the shade sits outside, it takes the heat before it hits the space, not after. The fabric rolls into an aluminum head box at the top, and cables or side tracks keep it steady as it comes down. Components are made for outdoor exposure, with stainless steel and zinc-coated hardware.
Insolroll Oasis Patio Shades
Insolroll has made Oasis patio shades since 1986. The line covers most outdoor openings:
| Oasis model | What it’s for | Side guides |
| Oasis 2700 | Smaller patio openings and the outside of windows | Cable or side track |
| Oasis 2800 | Larger patios; Insolroll’s original and best-selling design | Cable or side track |
| Oasis 2900 | Retractable insect screen and sun shade in one | Zipper track, sealed on all four sides |
| Oasis 2950 | Tension zipper shade for windy, exposed spots | Adjustable zipper track |
Choosing the Fabric: Openness and Color
Screen fabric comes in different openness levels, which is how tightly it’s woven. A tighter weave blocks more sun and glare. A more open weave gives a clearer view out.
Color matters as much as openness. Insolroll’s guidance is that lighter colors reflect more heat and give more daytime privacy, while darker colors cut more glare and give the clearest view through the fabric. We bring samples so you can hold them up against your own view.
Patio Shades for Patios, Porches and Pergolas
Covered patios. The most common spot we install. Shades mount to the beam or ceiling along each open side, so you can lower just the west side at 5 p.m. and leave the rest open.
Porches and screened porches. On a front or back porch, exterior shades add privacy from the street and block low sun that a roof can’t. On an existing screened porch, they mount outside the screens and add the sun and rain protection screens alone don’t give.
Pergolas, gazebos, and decks. Open structures need a solid beam to mount to, and posts if you want side tracks. We check the structure before recommending a model. Pergolas far from an outlet are a good fit for solar-powered shades.
Patio doors and windows. Smaller Oasis shades also mount outside a sliding patio door or large window to stop heat before it reaches the glass.
Golf course homes. A lowered shade also stops stray golf balls without blocking your view of the fairway.
Block Glare, Heat, Bugs and Prying Eyes
Glare
Late-day sun on a west- or south-facing patio is the reason most people call us. A lowered shade softens direct light so you can see a screen, read, or eat without squinting. For strong sunset glare, a tighter weave in a darker color works best.
Heat
A shade outside the space stops the sun before it lands on your furniture, floor, and skin. The patio stays noticeably more comfortable through the afternoon, and you can still feel the breeze through the fabric. In winter, roll the shades up to let the low sun warm the space.
Privacy
During the day, screen fabric lets you see out while neighbors see much less in, especially with lighter colors and tighter weaves. At night it reverses: with lights on behind the shade, people outside can see in. If evening privacy matters, ask about Insolroll’s translucent privacy fabric, which blocks the view in both directions.
Bugs
Lowering your shades before dusk keeps most mosquitoes and flies off the patio. For a true bug-free space, the Oasis 2900 and 2950 seal all four sides: zipper edges in the side tracks, a seal at the top, and a flexible seal along the bottom. Standard cable-guided shades leave small side gaps, so they reduce bugs but don’t stop them.
Wind and Rain
Shades cut chilly spring wind and keep most rain off the seating area, but they aren’t waterproof walls. Side guides decide how steady a shade stays in a breeze:
| Cable guide | Side track | Zipper track (2900, 2950) | |
| Look | Most minimal; works on round columns and masonry | Clean aluminum channel for square posts | More enclosed, fabric locked in the track |
| Steadiness in a breeze | Some movement | Better sway control | Fabric held edge to edge; 2950 is wind-rated by Insolroll |
| Bugs | Small side gaps | Small side gaps | Sealed on all four sides |
Insolroll’s advice applies to every patio shade: don’t leave it lowered in high winds.
Manual or Motorized Patio Shades?
Both work well. The choice comes down to how wide your openings are, how often you’ll move the shades, and whether you have power nearby.
Manual (crank) shades raise and lower with a hand crank and gear. They’re simple and need no wiring, which makes them a good fit for a single opening you set once or twice a day. Insolroll offers crank operation on its Oasis 2700 and 2800 shades.
Motorized shades move at the press of a button, from a remote, a wall switch or your phone. They’re the better choice when you have several openings, a very wide span, or shades you’ll adjust as the sun moves across the patio. Insolroll’s motorized shades use Somfy motors, with a Lutron option, and can connect to Alexa, Google, and most home automation systems. Its insect-screen model, the Oasis 2900, is motorized only.
No outlet nearby? Insolroll’s solar-powered shades charge from a small panel and battery, so there’s no wiring to run to a pergola or detached structure.

| Manual crank | Motorized | Solar-powered | |
| How it moves | Hand crank and gear | Remote, wall switch, app, or voice | Same controls, battery charged by a solar panel |
| Wiring | None | Power at the shade | None |
| Best for | One or two openings | Several or very wide openings | Pergolas and spots far from an outlet |
Measuring and Professional Installation
Outdoor openings are rarely square. Posts lean, beams sag, and patio slabs slope for drainage. That’s why store-bought shades so often end up the wrong size or flap at the bottom. Every Insolroll shade we install is made to order for your openings.
Here’s what happens at your free consultation:
- We measure each opening at several points, top and bottom, and note out-of-square posts and sloping floors.
- We check what we’re mounting to. Wood beams, masonry columns, siding, and pergola framing each need different hardware. We’ll tell you if a structure needs a header or posts first.
- We plan side guides and power. Cable, side track, or zipper track depends on your posts and how much bug and wind control you want. For motorized shades, we look at where power is or whether solar makes more sense.
- You pick fabric and color from samples held up against your own view.
- Our own crew installs the head boxes, guides, and controls, then shows you how to use them.

Caring for Outdoor Shades Through Kansas City Winters
Exterior shades are built to stay outside year-round, so there’s nothing to take down in the fall. A few habits keep them working for years:
- Keep them rolled up in snow, ice, and high wind. Don’t lower a shade that’s iced over or frozen to its guides; let it thaw first.
- Roll them up on sunny winter days to let the low sun warm the patio.
- Clear the path. Before lowering, make sure furniture, planters, and grills aren’t in the way.
- Check the head box each spring. Insolroll recommends removing the cover to clear leaves and nests.
- Clean the side tracks with compressed air or a strong hose nozzle so the fabric glides freely.
- Rinse the fabric with a gentle spray of water if it gets dusty or pollen-covered, and let it dry fully before rolling it up.

Outdoor Shade FAQs
What are exterior solar screen shades?
They’re roller shades made for outdoor use. A woven screen fabric rolls down over the open sides of a patio, porch, or pergola to cut glare, heat, and bugs while you still see out, then rolls up into a head box when you don’t need it.
Can people see through outdoor shades at night?
Yes, if lights are on behind them. Screen fabric gives daytime privacy, but at night the effect reverses. For evening privacy, choose a translucent privacy fabric, which blocks the view in both directions.
Will outdoor shades keep bugs out?
Lowering any shade before dusk keeps most bugs away. For a fully sealed space, zipper-track models like the Insolroll Oasis 2900 and 2950 close all four sides. Cable-guided shades leave small side gaps.
How do I keep patio shades from flapping in the wind?
Choose the right side guides. Side tracks control sway better than cables, and zipper tracks hold the fabric edge to edge. Whatever the system, roll shades up in high winds.
Do outdoor shades keep rain out?
They keep most rain off your seating area, especially zipper-track shades, but they aren’t waterproof. In driving storms, roll them up.
Are motorized patio shades worth it?
For several openings or wide spans, yes. You can raise every shade with one button or a schedule instead of cranking each one. For a single opening you set once a day, a manual crank works well.
Can you install outdoor shades on a pergola?
Yes, as long as there’s a solid beam to mount to. Side tracks need posts. If there’s no power at the pergola, solar-powered shades avoid running wiring.
Do I need to take outdoor shades down in winter?
No. They’re built to stay up year-round. Keep them rolled up in snow, ice, and high wind, and let them thaw before lowering if they freeze.
What color shade works best on a west-facing patio?
For strong afternoon sun, a darker color with a tighter weave cuts the most glare and gives the clearest view out. Lighter colors reflect more heat and give more daytime privacy. We bring samples so you can compare.
